Wadume's Arrest: Police Proactive Abilities; The Question Ahead

The recent rearrest of a popular kidnap kingpin in Kano State by the Nigerian Police is another twist behind the ugly happening which occurred in Taraba State amidst the unnecessary indictment of the Nigerian Army by the police over the demise of its personnel who died in the course of duty. The event is unfortunate however the unprofessional approach adopted by the Nigeria Police calls for prompt investigation, questioning and redress.

It is a statement of fact that investigations concerning the incidence is ongoing and without proper coordination, the Nigeria Police rearrested the suspect, interviewed him (according to the security agent) and made his confessional statements public.

This approach negates the procedural attainment of professionalism expected from a supposedly glorified security agent. The arrest of Wadume can be made public but the alleged confessional statement obtained from the culprit is a sensitive issue that should not be made public pending the outcome of the Panel of Enquiry set up by the Federal Government to unravel the truth behind the ugly encounter. Does it mean the police cannot entertain secrecy pending the outcome of investigations?

Another mind boggling issue which instigates mixed feelings is the way and manner the suspect was reportedly apprehended. We have had cases of high profiled criminals who are still on the run many years after being fingered for participating in crime. The interception of Wadume by the Nigeria Police is applaudable however it calls for questioning in comparison to the way and manner many high profile criminals are still at large many years after indictment in crime. The police should endeavour to replicate same style of apprehension of criminals even though the circumstances surrounding Wadume's latest arrest is fishy.

Every pundit may appreciate the posture of Nigerian Army so far as they overcome the temptation and indiscipline to join issues with the NPF aside the initial press release it issued in response to NPF public outcry and blatant aspersions on the Army. As a responsible organization, the Army is awaiting the outcome of the panel while the police is bent on making further hullabaloo banking on the alleged confessional statement obtained from the suspect indicting the Army. The lingering issue is not a faceoff between the two organization but the Nigeria Police should have a rethink by allowing the panel conclude their investigations. The best task for the police is to emulate the discipline and finesse of the Army by not instigating media trial and sounding prejudicial and bias.

The peace and tranquility of the country is the anticipated dream of every well meaning Nigerian and it is more civil for citizens to join hands with security agencies to safeguard the country by reporting and fast tracking the arrest of suspected criminal elements living within their vicinities. The vain attempt to dent the good image of the Nigerian Army by the police is a dishonest approach that must be shunned even though Nigerians are not gullible. It is not an ample time for blame game but another opportunity for the police to be more objective, more lawful and non sentimental for the sake of National peace, security and inter agency collaboration.

Nigerian Army Team Bags Gold, Bronze In Taekwando Competition

The 8th Edition of the Inspector General of Police (IGP's) Open Taekwondo Championship, has ended, with the Nigerian Army Taekwando team, winning 7 medals. The competition was held at the Civic Centre, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, from 24 to 28 July, 2019. The championship featured participants from the 36 States of the Federation, as well as various Taekwondo Clubs across the country. Some international athletes from West African countries also participated in the event. About 250 competitors participated in the championship.
