GENERAL GOWON APPLAUDS MANAGERS OF NYSC

The founder of the National Youth Service Corps scheme, General Yakubu Gowon has saluted the past and present managers of the National Youth Service Corps for mentoring graduate youths towards becoming responsible leaders in the society.

He said the NYSC Scheme has instilled the spirit of selfless service into many Corps Members across the country in the 46 years of it's existence.

General Gowon gave this commendation when the Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim visited him in his office in Abuja on Monday.

While congratulating the Director General on his recent appointment as the 18th helmsman, the former Head of State expressed delight over NYSC's monumental contributions to the nation on many fronts.

He equally congratulated Corps Members on their selfless services to the country through the NYSC, which has given them the opportunity of loving the diverse cultures that made up Nigeria.

"NYSC is a scheme that brings our youths to love their country. l am delighted that the Scheme is 46 and still going strong", General Gowon said.

Speaking further, Gowon also commended the Federal Government for granting automatic employment to 168 NYSC President's Honours Award recipients with scholarship package.

He lauded the involvement of NYSC in the 2019 general elections while he urged the staff to work towards sustaining the Scheme.

The NYSC founding father also appealed to State Governments in the provision maintenance of facilities at NYSC Orientation Camps.

Earlier, Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim said he decided to pay homage to the elder statesman in recognition of the role he played in midwifing such an awesome Scheme.

He lamented over people's ignorance about the NYSC Act 2004, and pledged to come with various strategies to ensure adequate enlightenment among the populace.

The Director-General sought support from General Yakubu Gowon in order to take the Scheme to enviable heights.

Nigerian Army Team Bags Gold, Bronze In Taekwando Competition

The 8th Edition of the Inspector General of Police (IGP's) Open Taekwondo Championship, has ended, with the Nigerian Army Taekwando team, winning 7 medals. The competition was held at the Civic Centre, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, from 24 to 28 July, 2019. The championship featured participants from the 36 States of the Federation, as well as various Taekwondo Clubs across the country. Some international athletes from West African countries also participated in the event. About 250 competitors participated in the championship. Nigerian Army's Taekwondo team, made up of 12 athletes comprising 8 male and 4 female, featured in the exciting tourney. At the end of the 4-day sporting extravaganza, the Army's Taekwondo team carted away 4 Gold and 3 Bronze Medals.
