DCP Abba Kyari: A ‘spirit’ or man full of grace?

By Mohammed Baba At times, one is tempted to believe that some human beings one meets in the course of life are not just ordinary mortals. They may have all the qualities and attributes of human beings, but the way and manner they handle some situations, more so, consistently, makes one see them as super humans. Most times human beings with such extraordinary attributes are being given different names. Some even call them ‘spirits’, while others attributes their extraordinary life to using either charms of concoctions. Others, however, see them as men or women who are enjoying tremendous Grace of God in their lives. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Abba Kyari, is one of such Nigerians with exceptional grace of God in his life. A geography graduate from the University of Maiduguri, Kyari, is one of the youngest senior police officers in the country. Because of his exceptional exploit in the Nigeria Police Force, especially in the area of arrest of notorious and hardened criminals, DCP Kyari is being seen differently by different people. While many see him as one who is blessed by God to do what he is doing, others see him as having some ‘super powers’ working for him. In fact, to be blunt, some believe that Abba Kyari is either a spirit is working closely with spirits due to the way he gets to arrest criminals that have defy arrest for many years. Some of the notorious and die-hard criminals that have terrorized and kept Nigerians under intense agony and in perpetual fear in recent years met their end when Abba Kyari was brought to the scene. While responding to a question during a recent interview on the way most Nigerians think that he is either a spirit or is using charms to get the notorious criminals arrested, DCP Kyari said: “Many people believe that I use charms but I do not use any charm. “For instance, when we arrested Ndagi about 14 years ago, there was a rumour that before I was able to arrest him, I travelled to my village in Maiduguri to get charms to help me make the arrest. They said it took me seven days to have the charm and that immediately I left Maiduguri, I got him arrested. I laughed because nothing like that happened and I did not even visit my village three months before his arrest. “We were able to arrest him because we were dedicated. The technology we had then was nothing compared to what we have now.” DCP Kyari’s extraordinary performance in the Force started many years back when he was a much younger officer. His dedication has earned him several awards. He’s a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and has received numerous awards both home and abroad. DCP Kyari is the only police officer in Nigeria that has so far received triple IGP Commendation Medal for Courage. He got the rare commendation in 2012, 2013, 2014. He is the only officer that has ever received triple Lagos State Governor’s award for Gallantry, Leadership and Service excellence 2011, 2012, 2013; Lagos State Commissioner of Police Commendation Award for Courage 2011; Best Anti-Crime Police Officer in West Africa from Security Watch Africa, Star Award from CRAN 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 & 2017; 2018 Hero of the Year Award by Silverbird Group and highest of them all Presidential Medal for Courage from President Mohammadu Buhari on 1/4/2016. It would be recalled that it was during the tenure of IGP Idris that the war against notorious armed robbers, kidnappers and other related crimes became intensed. DCP Kyari was at the centre of it. This is because during the time of previous IGPs, notorious criminals like the popular Evans where terrorising and kidnapping Nigerians without commensurate confrontation, however, when IGP Idris came on board and identified DCP Kyari and gave him open hand to operate, the game changed and the reign and terror of notorious criminals like Henry Chibueze a.k.a. ‘Vampire’ was brought to a halt on March 2, 2017. Evans, the popular billionaire kidnapper was also picked up by the team led by Kyari. Hundreds of kidnappers who kidnapped high profile Nigerians, especially in the Abuja-Kaduna expressway, cattle rustlers and armed robbers were also arrested through the intervention of DCP Kyari’s team. Even recently, following the surge in the rate of kidnapping along the Abuja-Kaduna highway, DCP Kyari and his team stormed the area and things dramatically change leading to the current Acting IGP Mohammed Adamu to declare the area safe for travelers. The team led by DCP Kyari was instrumental to the intensified fight against cultism in the last few years leading to the arrest of many cultists while many others discovered that the environment was dangerous for their operation, hence, renounced their membership. DCP Kyari has no limit to his exploit. He has overseen covert operations of many high profile cases that led to the arrest of the suspects in different part of the country. Among some of the high profile criminals that were arrested under his lead include the killers of former Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) Air Marshal Alex Badeh ‘rtd’ along Keffi-Gitata -Kaduna Road; arrest of the most wanted Boko-Haram Commander, Umar Abdulmalik and 8 of his gang members; arrest of 22 Boko-Haram terrorist gang members responsible for the kidnap of the Chibok School Girls in 2014 and also responsible for series of suicide bombings/several attacks and ambush against security agents in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa States, among many others. In trying to paint a vivid description of the kind of person DCP Kyari is when he was recently promoted as DCP, the former President, Crime Reporters Association of Nigeria (CRAN), Sunday Odita, said: “An honour well deserved. The brain behind the end of the reign of notorious armed robbers who terrorised the southwest, Abbey Godogodo, China and many others, Abba Kyari is now a DCP. “As a reporter on the Crime/Police Affairs/Security and allied beat, I can tell you that this cop is among the very few police officers who are shining lights. “The day my respect for him tripled was the day I reported to him that my colleague’s phone worth over N200,000 was stolen at an event in Lagos in 2017. “Kyari asked me to snap the pack of the phone and send to his whatsapp. Few days later, he sent me the picture of the suspect and the phone. “My colleague who is now resident in USA was shocked. The phone thieve was paraded and DCP Kyari did not ask for 10 kobo for a successful job done. “This is one among many cases I reported to him and the victims got justice….” DCP Kyari, whether he is a ‘spirit’ of a mere mortal with exceptional grace from the Almighty, is a blessing to Nigeria. He needs to be encouraged with higher responsibilities to do more. The likes of DCP Kyari may be hidden in the Nigeria Police Force, it is important the police authorities discover and reward them accordingly for them to do more for the country.

Kogi Guber: Dissecting Igala Unity; A Stitch In Time

By Ajogwu Jerry Ochada A popular African proverb comes to mind immediately I perused the list of ministerial nominees submitted by President Muhammadu Buhari: "a river that forgets its source is destined to dry". It beats my wild imagination how the once upon a time most favoured breeds across the Niger, fell within a twinkle of an eye to this present stage in the spheres of politics. No doubts, everything is possible on the political terrain but ane-Igala from the time of our ancestors never witnessed defeat or failure. We were classified as the most favoured political breeds in the Middle-belt region but the reverse is now the case. Recall that during the Second Republic, the present day Kogi State was under Benue State, yet we successfully produced the Deputy Governor in the person of Alhaji Sule Iyaji without much rancor with other ethnic groups in Benue. It was an easy scale of dominance perhaps because our leaders; traditional and political actors worked together

Secret Graveyard: Echoes of Defeated Terrorists

By Ajogwu Jerry Ochada As a student of diplomacy, one of the first lessons I learnt under the tutelage of my teachers is to decipher the aims of terrorism; the activites of terrorists. The major targets of these inimical elements all over the world is to instill fear in the minds of the populace. Another notable propaganda often utilized by terrorists is to hit a target where it could record high number of casualties (to make news headlines) by so doing the media would accord the orchestrated attack a wildfire styled reportage. It is pitiably unfortunate that on this part of the globe, terrorism is thriving in contemporary assessments as a result of the "5th columnists" who are ever ready to publish fallacious documents in solidarity with terrorist bound but are always at large whenever our armed forces record greater feat against the insurgents. As a result of these deficit, there is a breeding section of divergent public opinion promoted by misguided nationals and in
